Cut Your Energy Bills in 2026: Which Appliances Are Costing You the Most?
If your January energy bill has landed with a thud, you're not alone. The combination of colder weather, darker evenings, and appliances working overtime during the festive period means January is typically the most expensive month for household energy.
But which appliances are the biggest culprits? And more importantly, what can you do about it?
The Biggest Energy Users in Your Home
1. Tumble Dryers
The humble tumble dryer is one of the most energy-hungry appliances in your home. A typical vented dryer uses around 4.5 kWh per cycle – that's roughly £1.35 every time you use it.
How to reduce costs:
- Switch to a heat pump dryer, which uses up to 50% less energy
- Clean the lint filter after every use (a clogged filter makes the dryer work harder)
- Spin clothes at a higher speed in your washing machine first
- Use a heated airer for smaller loads
2. Electric Ovens
Running your oven for an hour costs around 60-70p. Over Christmas, with all that roasting and baking, those costs add up quickly.
How to reduce costs:
- Use the fan setting – it's more efficient and cooks faster
- Batch cook to make the most of the heat
- Don't preheat longer than necessary (10 minutes is usually enough)
- Keep the door seal clean and check it's not damaged
3. Fridge Freezers
Your fridge freezer runs 24/7, making it one of your biggest annual energy expenses – even though it uses relatively little per hour. An inefficient model could be adding £100+ to your annual bill compared to an A-rated equivalent.
How to reduce costs:
- Check the door seals are airtight (the paper test: close the door on a piece of paper – if it slides out easily, the seal needs replacing)
- Keep the coils at the back dust-free
- Don't overfill – air needs to circulate
- Set your fridge to 3-4°C and freezer to -18°C
4. Washing Machines
A 40°C wash costs around 30-40p per cycle. Washing at 60°C nearly doubles that.
How to reduce costs:
- Wash at 30°C for everyday loads (modern detergents work fine at lower temperatures)
- Always run full loads
- Use the eco setting – it takes longer but uses less energy
- Descale your machine regularly if you're in a hard water area
5. Dishwashers
Running your dishwasher costs around 30-40p per cycle – and it's actually more efficient than washing by hand if you run it full.
How to reduce costs:
- Skip the pre-rinse (modern dishwashers don't need it)
- Use the eco programme
- Clean the filter monthly
- Check the spray arms aren't blocked
When to Consider Replacing an Appliance
If your appliance is over 10 years old, it's likely far less efficient than modern equivalents. Energy ratings have improved dramatically – an A-rated fridge freezer from 2015 would barely scrape a D or E rating today.
Signs your appliance is costing you money:
- It takes longer to do the same job
- It's noisier than it used to be
- The seals are worn or damaged
- It needs frequent repairs

Quick Wins for January
- Check your fridge/freezer temperature – many are set colder than necessary
- Defrost your freezer if there's ice build-up (just 5mm of ice increases energy use by 30%)
- Pull out your appliances and vacuum the dust from the backs and coils
- Run a hot wash on your empty washing machine with a descaler
- Replace any blown seals – we stock seals for most major brands
